Cetacean Institute News
The Cetacean Institute's first project is about ready for to embark on their summer 2026 field season. The Humpback Whale Missed Signals Project, lead by Dr. Fred Sharpe, is dedicated to probing the intelligence of humpback whales by examining human perceptual limitations and the hypothesis that critical whale biosignals have gone undetected or misunderstood. Who We Are
The Cetacean Institute fosters and funds novel, speculative research on cetaceans in the wild.
What We Do
We provide research grants and other funding to individuals who don’t have consistent ongoing support from other institutions.
Collaboration
The Cetacean Institute encourages multidisciplinary collaboration among people working in diverse fields, including but not limited to marine mammal science, bioacoustics, astrobiology, the arts, and philosophy.
Basic Science
We support fundamental research, rather than practical or commercially driven science, because this is typically where the greatest discoveries are made and also where funding is generally the most lacking.
